Mouthpieces
An easy and fairly inexpensive way to sound instantly better on trombone is to upgrade your mouthpiece. Most students start on a Bach 12C, but after the first year, the students have quickly grown out of that mouthpiece and need an upgrade.

Yamaha, Schilke, and Bach are more common trombone mouthpiece makers.
Students should look into upgrading to either:

-
Yamaha 48 (large cup) Small Bore Large Bore
-
Yamaha 51 (even larger cup, more full tone) Small Bore Large Bore
-
Bach 6 1/2 AL (large) or 5G (even larger) Small Bore Large Bore
-
Schilke 51 Small Bore Large Bore
Step-up Trombones
When upgrading trombones to the next level, it is best to at least look for a large bore trombone or a nice used professional instrument. When looking for a step-up, find one with an F-Attachment trigger valve!! Besides professional trombones, there are a few intermediate trombones that are your traditional step-up instrument.

When looking at brands, Yamaha (YSL-620, 640 ), Bach (42BO), trombones are the standard around the world (for a lower price, but good quality). Other brands of trombones are great as well, but they do not have quite the reputation that Yamaha and Bach have.
Be sure to play test!

Before purchasing an instrument/mouthpiece, always consult with your music teacher or private instrument instructor!!!
