An easy way to improve your clarinet tone and ease of playing is through an improved ligature. Many advanced and even professional clarinet players play on Rovner Ligatures. Many players recommend the "Versa" Ligature.

Another good brand of ligature is also the BG "Super Revelation" Ligature.
Mouthpieces
Another easy way to improve play-ability, response, and sound on clarinet, without putting out a fair amount of money to purchase a new instrument, would be to upgrade the clarinet mouthpiece.

Vandoren makes great clarinet mouthpieces. The Vandoren M13 Lyre Clarinet mouthpiece is the one of the most popular from Vandoren.

Step Up Instruments
When looking at a step up clarinet, the best brands are Buffet Crampon and Yamaha. A clarinet that will set students up for the rest of high school and college is a Buffet Crampon R13 (this is the standard professional clarinet!). Another affordable professional clarinet is the Yamaha YCL-650 or Yamaha YCL-CSVR. Be sure to play test!
